Perelada and Celler del Pescador receive sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection Certification.
With this recognition, both Spanish wineries reaffirm the Perelada&Chivite Group's commitment to a business model based on environmental, social, economic and governance criteria.
Perelada (Empordà D.O.) and Celler del Pescador have recently been awarded the demanding Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP) certification, the first and only sustainability certification developed specifically for wineries by the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), which has overseen the scheme since 2015. As a result, the Perelada&Chivite Group now has three certified wineries. Its winery in Vilafranca del Penedès (Catalonia), which produces Perelada and Privat cava (Cava D.O.), first obtained the certification in 2017 and has renewed it every two years ever since.
Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection recognises wineries that successfully complete a rigorous verification process against environmental, social, economic and governance criteria, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to environmental requirements, the certification assesses social sustainability, including matters relating to employees and suppliers, the local area and culture, and consumer health.
Moreover, the certification represents the evolution of the initiative that arose from the "Wineries for Climate Protection" manifesto, signed in June 2011, with Perelada among the seven founding wineries. Securing it this year therefore provides important recognition of the company's long-standing work to embed comprehensive sustainability as a strategic pillar of its operations.
Perelada, one of the leading wineries in the Empordà D.O., has made sustainability one of the pillars of its business model, driving pioneering initiatives from vineyard management through to winemaking. Among its key milestones, it became the first winery in Europe to achieve LEED® Gold certification in 2021, the highest global rating for sustainable construction.
Furthermore, all Perelada-owned vineyards are organic, while regenerative agriculture practices are being introduced - the Malaveïna and Garbet estates are already certified - thereby helping to restore biodiversity, improve soil health and capture CO2. This is complemented by efficient water management, based on a holistic view of the water cycle both within and beyond the winery, and by a sustainable irrigation model that optimises water use through highly efficient solutions. Notably, Finca Garbet, one of Perelada's most emblematic vineyards, meets 100% of its irrigation needs using reclaimed water from the municipal treatment plant in Colera, through a pioneering initiative launched in 1997.
Celler del Pescador
Meanwhile, at Celler del Pescador - the benchmark brand for lightly sparkling wine - sustainability is embodied in a winery designed to maximise resource efficiency and minimise its environmental impact. Accordingly, its new facilities, opened in 2025, incorporate sustainable measures such as solar panels with a capacity of up to 300 kW, which meet more than 90% of energy demand through on-site generation; a treatment plant for the facility's wastewater; and low-energy machinery.
In addition, process automation helps to reduce wastage and optimise resource use, while recycling systems and logistics integration with the Group's distribution centre reinforce a more efficient and sustainable production model.
