Ornellaia 2022 wines sale raises US$106,875
Bonhams’s sale of Ornellaia’s Vendemmia d’Artista collection large sale format from the 2022 vintage raised US$106,875 for charity last week.
The online sale, which closed on 24 June, sold 12 of the 14 lots, although some failed to reach the pre-sale estimates that had been anticipated.
Each vintage in Ornellaia’s Vandemmie d’Artista series sports a label created by a different artist, and the 2022 vintage saw Cameroonian artist Pascal Marthine Tayou take up the baton, with vivid labels depicting the life cycle of a plant, with the larger formats featuring colourful textile patchwork cases made from reclaimed materials. Each label contributes its own section of a sequence showing the various stages of the plant as it manages to sprout with determination – a nod to the 2022 wine’s name, La Determinazione.
Proceeds from the sale went to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to support an upcoming exhibition, Collections in Focus: Modern European Currents, which opens in July 2025 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
The highlight of the sale was a 9L Salamanzar of Ornellaia 2022, which realised US$15,000 to an online bidder, in line with its low pre-sale estimate of US$15,000-20,000. This was followed by a 6L bottle of Ornellaia 2022 ‘La Determinazione’ Vendemmia d’Artista, which sold for US$11,875 and then a series of 6L bottles alongside a 5 bottle vertical of varying vintages, from 1990-95 to 2015-2020. These were estimated to raise US$9000 – 12,000 or US$12,000- £17,000, depending on the vintages in the vertical, but only four of the six were sold, achieving US$10,000 against the US$12,000 – $17,000 estimate for the 1990-94 and 1995-99 verticals.
