Henkell Freixenet takes on full control of Freixenet.
Henkell Freixenet has acquired 100% ownership of Spanish sparkling wine giant Freixenet, after the founding Ferrer family and José Luis Bonet agreed to sell their remaining shares.
The deal, completed on 2 March, gives Henkell Freixenet 100% control of Freixenet S.A.
The two sides first joined forces in 2018, when Germany’s Henkell & Co. Group and Freixenet agreed a 50/50 partnership.
The Ferrer family and Bonet remained as shareholders, with the alliance creating what has today become the world’s leading sparkling wine producer.
But now, after eight years of collaboration, the Ferrer and Bonet families have now sold their remaining shares, meaning the descendants of the company’s original founders Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolores Sala Vivé, no longer have an ownership stake in the brand.
Forward thinking
The deal’s financial details have not been disclosed.
Pedro Ferrer and José Luis Bonet will both stay involved with Freixenet S.A,, serving as honorary presidents. Ferrer is also expected to continue representing the company in certain institutions.
Dr Andreas Brokemper, chief executive of Henkell Freixenet, said the partnership had been built on “tradition, quality and continuity”, adding that the integration had strengthened the group’s international position in the global sparkling wine market.
He said it was “an honour” to take on Freixenet and assume the responsibility of “successfully developing the company into the future”.
‘Emotional moment’
Ferrer described the sale as “an emotional moment” for the family, saying they had found in Henkell Freixenet a partner capable of preserving Freixenet’s legacy while leading it into its next phase.
Bonet said the move would ensure continuity for a company renowned for its tradition, while accelerating its expansion as an international brand.
The Ferrer family and Bonet said they would continue to play an active role in Spain’s wine sector through increased investment in Ferrer Wines, a winery owned and managed by Ferrer.
Freixenet, best known for its cava and other sparkling wines, was founded in Catalonia and has grown into one of Spain’s most recognisable wine brands, with a significant presence in international markets.
