“Best Value Red” for Abadal Mandó 2023 and 96 points for Abadal Sagristia C-1 in Tim Atkin MW’s report
Tim Atkin MW and his colleague Fintan Kerr have presented the Catalan Wines Special Report 2026, one of the most respected reports on Catalan wines. In this latest edition, Abadal reinforces its position with outstanding scores.
Abadal Mandó 2023 has been named “Best Value Red Wine of the Year”, with 94 points, highlighting the potential of the Mandó variety as a true expression of its origin. As Atkin notes, it is “brambly, fresh and beautifully Mediterranean”, and he underlines that coming from a once almost-forgotten grape variety, now emerging as one of the region’s most unexpected stars, “is the cherry on top”. He also highlights the winery’s work in recovering the variety, as well as how the warmth of the 2023 vintage has helped bring out its best expression.
Meanwhile, Abadal Sagristia C-1 has scored 96 points, achieving the highest rating within the fortified wines category and being included among the “Best Fortified”. The critics describe it as: “An old and deeply intense Vi Ranci, saturated with dried orange, salted caramel, toasted nuts and dried white flowers, briny and mouth-watering, carrying immense concentration without losing balance or energy”, confirming it as one of the finest examples of its kind.
Abadal Arboset 2021, with 97 points, remains among the top-rated wines, consolidating its status as one of the winery’s flagship references. Other wines featured in the report include Abadal Nuat 2016 with 94 points, and Abadal Picapoll 2024 with 92 points.
The presentation took place on May 4th at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site in Barcelona, in an event organised by the Associació Vinícola Catalana, bringing together wine professionals, press, distributors and the hospitality sector. Following the official welcome, Tim Atkin MW and Fintan Kerr shared insights from the report and discussed the results, followed by the presentation of diplomas to the awarded wines.
