Vins i Licors Grau, a renovated space.

The history of “the best wine shop in the world,” in the words of Josep Pitu Roca at the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of Vins i Licors Grau company, started at the end of the 1970s.  In fact, it all started on 1st August, 1977, when Jordi Grau and Maria Dolors Segarra opened their own business in Palafrugell (Girona) with around 1200 m2 of space dedicated to the distribution of bottled wines and spirits.

To understand how they got there, you have to go back a few years.  Since 1966, Jordi Grau (a music student in his younger years) had been involved in the family business, a wine cellar in Palamós where they sold and distributed wine in bulk. Around this time, he moved to Barcelona to study at the Music Conservatory. To finance his studies, he bought cases of wine from an establishment in Barcelona owned by Maria Dolors’ family, which he then sold in Palafrugell. This is when the two crossed paths and the familial and professional story of the Grau-Segarras began.

They married in 1974 and started their own business. Over the years, this business grew, with subsequent expansions to their premises. They also acquired exclusive distribution agreements for the province of Girona. Thanks to these exclusive agreements, they were able to create DIGISA (Distribuïdora Gironina, S.A.), which focused solely on this side of the business.

Their business continued to grow over the 1990s, with the expectation that the next generation (Sergi and Jordi) would join them.  At this time, they moved to new premises, in the same location as today, to which they have recently added new spaces, including a 400 m2 underground area which they use for product presentations and tastings. They have also opened a wine cellar with old vintages dating from the 1920s to the 1980s.  Other developments include a 1,200 m2 air-conditioned warehouse and the expansion of the Vinoteca to 500 m2.

In all, Vins i Licors Grau has invested some €3.5 million in all of these developments, as well as introducing an innovative automated system for their online store, with the ambition of growing their sales outside Catalonia.

The company's sales volume has reached 12 million bottles with over 10,000 different types of wines and spirits. With this expansion, they will have around 12,000 items in their store and, obviously, they are aiming for a significant increase in sales.

In addition to family, friends, suppliers, distributors and local dignitaries from the villages and towns around Palafrugell, their 40th anniversary party was attended by some important figures from the wine industry including Xavier Gramona, Telmo Rodríguez, the Marquis of Griñón and his daughter, and celebrities, such as Manuel Fuentes (the host of Spanish TV show, “Tu cara me suena”) and Bertín Osborne.

We wish the family and the team behind Vins i Licors Grau continued success!
