With its long wine-growing tradition spanning 20 generations, Raventós i Blanc is one of the reference wineries in Catalonia. Back in the 19th century, it was Raventós i Blanc who defined the holy trilogy of Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada as the coupage at the heart of cava, which has remained unchanged to this day. Today the winery is run by Pepe Raventós. Pepe is from the generation which, without forsaking any of its tradition, has strengthened the winery’s quality roots, concentrating on a specific geographic area which defines its identity perfectly. This identity, they argued, had become somewhat diluted as the Cava D.O. covers too large an area.  In 2012, they therefore took the decision to no longer be a part of it and to set off in a new direction, proposing the creation of a new D.O., “Conca del Riu Anoia”, which allows them to express themselves more sincerely and to create their own future in which the environment, indigenous varietals and human talent come together to create authentic wines.

Appearance

Nice golden yellow hue with good intensity.

Nose

Full of nuances, initially dominated by lightly toasted notes reminiscent of corn, giving way to more citrus aromas.  There is a distinctive and pleasant aroma of ripe peach.

Palate

Enveloping and seriously vinous, with pronounced almond and citrus flavours that lead to a finish with depth and tints of sour cherry. Very dry.

Comment

A great sparkling wine produced from minority local red grape varieties and complemented by two white varieties grown on the estate’s highest parcel. Produced using biodynamic viticulture, this sparkling wine unequivocally claims to be the ultimate expression of Mediterranean varietals born on stony soil and marked by a warm year in the Penedés region.  It has undergone long ageing on the lees, giving it concentration on the palate.  This is a really tasty sparkling wine, long on the palate, and very interesting for the originality of the coupage which is a clear demonstration of the exceptional route that the winery has taken.
