As Caborcas is the fruit of the union of an exceptional duet made up of Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza, in Valdeorras.  As Caborcas is part of the ambitious, far-reaching wine company known as the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, which has a presence in nine regions of Spain.

The objective of this, the company's latest enterprise, is to recover the Godello and  Mencía grape varieties.  However, in this new wine, they go a step further by adding Merenzao, Sausón and Grenache to the Godello, in order to give it a fresh, aromatic and floral touch.

Appearance

Light cherry red hue. Very bright.

Nose

Elegant primary aromas of cherries, blackcurrants and violets predominate and combine with balsamic notes and scrubland herbs. Spicy aromas against a backdrop of mineral smokiness. Very fragrant.

Palate

Medium bodied and pleasant, with aromas consistent with those found on the nose.  Delicate on the palate, but showing nerve and a great deal of finesse. Very deep, fresh finish with its own distinct personality.

Comment

The name “As Caborcas" comes from the name of the vineyard, where the grapes for this wine are grown, and the name means "oriented northwest".  There are two parcels covering 2.5 hectares located on incredibly steep slopes facing the River Bibei, at an altitude of 550 metres above sea level, set out in terraces, where different varieties coexist: Mencía, Merenzao, Sousón, Grenache, Godello, etc.  The vines, aged between 50 and 70 years, grow on granitic soils which give the wine a mineral backdrop.  The wine is shaped by 12 months of gentle ageing in 2,000 litre oak vats.  It is delicate, packed with cherries, liquorice, and with a tautness and depth which mark its character.  As our friend Josep Roca would put it – feminine, but not fragile.  Without doubt, one of the great red wines of Galicia with only 1,992 bottles produced.

Recommended with salmon in "papillote" with tartare sauce.
