When you talk about Francesc Grimalt’s wines you are effectively talking about the history of Balearic wines over the last twenty years, especially the Mallorcan wines from the Migjorn region in the southeast of the island. Grimalt is directly responsible for bringing the little known “rustic elegance” of the Callet Balearic grape variety to the public’s attention. The 4kilos Bodega, located in the town of Felanitx, officially opened in 2008. The Bodega works vineyards located in different parts of the island but they generally follow the same format: old vines, planted mainly on clay loam soils with abundant iron oxide, native vegetation cover and the use of sustainable viticulture. Appearance: Lovely purple red hue with a crimson rim. Very attractive medium depth colour. Nose: Very expressive, slightly creamy with very marked spicy notes, particularly white pepper, dark fruit and hibiscus blossom. More mineral notes gradually emerge, along with strong earthy-type aromas. Palate: Pleasant and soft on entry. Great expression. Spicy and warm, with well defined ripe fruit but nothing heavy. Slight mineral notes and hints of incense. Very long, delicious finish. An elegant treat of a wine. Comment: This wine represents the culmination of Grimalt’s work to illustrate his vision of the Callet grape. An “almost” mono-varietal produced in two tiny parcels in the Felanitx area. It is a wine of great elegance and tremendous depth. A Mediterranean wine, without any hint of heaviness, in which the sun shows through. It is a “small burgundy”, Mallorcan-style, with character and a very big personality. The Callet variety, so delicate, sickly, irregular and tricky to work with… has benefited from Grimalt’s expertise. The result is a wine of character in its purest form, well defined in every way, and a delight to all those who taste it. And these will be a lucky few - only one thousand bottles have been produced of this first vintage. Although it goes well with many types of dishes, try it with a Mallorcastyle Grouper with raisins and pine nuts. Irresistible.
